LET'S SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT--OYINLOLA
As the world marked Environment Day on Thursday, Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has called for concerted efforts to save the environment from degradation and ensure food security.
Prince Oyinlola, in statement he issued to mark the day noted that gross abuse of the environment had resulted in very negative impacts on climatic condition of the Earth.
"Combating Climate Change is undoubtedly a daunting task, but there is some relief and hope since the problem has been caused largely by human action, it should be possible to reverse the trend by concerted human action. Let us explore the possibilities of recycling waste and ensure effective management.
"The days of old must be re-enacted by conserving trees on our private farms. My charge to forest managers and loggers is that logging must be rationally carried out while farmers should desist from illegal encroachment into the forest reserve to ensure sustainability," he said.
The governor stressed that his administration was "poised ever than before to ensure mass afforestation and rehabilitating the private sector and those that are wealthy to invest in large scale forestry venture."
"The onerous task of mitigating the adverse effect of climate change must be seen as collective responsibility. Halting deforestation and increasing the rate of regeneration would be the easiest and cheapest way in the battle against Climate Change.
"The adverse effect of global warming spells disaster to all living creatures with corresponding threat to coastal region, proneness to drought and desertification, threat to water resources, threat to food security and livelihood, threat to health security and threat to energy, industry and transport sectors," the Governor said.
