Osun Govt Deploys Veterinary Officers To Checkmate Bird Flu
WORRIED by the recent outbreak of Avian Influenza ( AI), otherwise known as bird flu in the country, the Osun State government has deployed the veterinary officers in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to the control posts in and around the state, with a view to checkmating the influx of the disease.
The state governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, made this disclosure at the weekend in Osogbo at a seminar for the prevention of bird flu in the state, organised by Tuns Farms, in collaboration with Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Osun State chapter.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, the governor hinted that his government was making concerted efforts to nip in the bud any single case of AI in the state.
According to Aregbesola, “you could recollect that when the disease became epidemic in Nigeria in year 2006, there was no single case of it in our state. In our bid to prevent the recent cases spotted in some states, we have approved the purchase of chemicals to fumigate all farms in the state.
“I have also directed veterinary department in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to deploy all its officers to man all the control posts in and out of the state.”
He, however, lauded Tuns Farms for organising the seminar, just as he solicited support of people of the state and PAN in the fight against the disease, by promptly reporting strange bird behaviour and high mortalities of birds to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
