The Osun State Taskforce on Environmental Sanitation has engaged Iyalojas, Babalojas, Baales, religious leaders and other critical stakeholders on the need to end the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on major roads, waterways and other unauthorised locations across the state.
The sensitisation meeting, held on Tuesday, at the state secretariat, was aimed at deepening public understanding of the state government’s renewed enforcement against indiscriminate waste disposal and its implications for public health, environmental safety and the prevention of flooding.
Addressing the stakeholders, members of the taskforce explained that dumping refuse on roads, drainage channels and waterways is now an offence and urged community leaders to help educate their members and residents on the new enforcement measures.
The taskforce stressed that the government’s decision was not intended to punish residents but to protect the environment, prevent the blockage of waterways and promote a cleaner and healthier Osun State.
Responding, the stakeholders expressed their support for the initiative and pledged to sensitise their members and communities about the dangers and consequences of indiscriminate waste disposal.
They also acknowledged the role of traditional, market and religious leaders in driving behavioural change, promising to encourage residents to dispose of their waste responsibly and patronise approved waste disposal channels.
The taskforce urged residents to cooperate with the government, stressing that maintaining a clean environment is a collective responsibility and requires the active participation of individuals, community leaders and organisations.
It further called on stakeholders to ensure that the message reaches every part of their communities, particularly traders, residents and other groups whose activities may contribute to indiscriminate waste disposal.
The engagement is part of the state government’s broader efforts to improve environmental sanitation, protect waterways and reduce the risk of flooding across Osun State.
