Pharmaceutical activities take place in at least 42 facilities of the 58 facilities under the Hospitals Management Board. These facilities include a specialist state hospital, nine state hospitals, five general hospitals and not less than twenty five comprehensive health care centers and they are manned by pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
Activities being carried out include but not limited to:

Medication Dispensing: Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians prepare and dispense medications for inpatients and outpatients.

  • Medication Management: Pharmacists review medication orders, monitor for potential interactions
or side effects, and optimize medication regimens.
  • Clinical Pharmacy Services and pharmaceutical Care: Pharmacists provide direct patient care,
including identifying/solving potential or actual drug therapy problems.
  • Pharmacovigilance: The department reports and monitors adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and
    medication errors.
  • Medication Reconciliation: Pharmacists ensure accurate medication lists are maintained during
patient transitions (e.g., admission, discharge, or transfer).
  • Antimicrobial Stewardship: In order to stem the tide of antimicrobial resistance, we promote
responsible use of antibiotics and antimicrobials through drug advice, prescription audit and
    rational antimicrobial prescribing and dispensing.
  • Drug Information Services: We provide evidence based information to educate patients, families,
healthcare staff and the public about medications, their use, potential side effects and we respond
    to enquiries made about drugs
  • Research and Development: We participate in researches, generating data for use in investigating
both old and new medications or treatment approaches. We seek to identify areas of interventions
towards a better health care delivery.
  • Ward Rounds and Inter-professional Collaborations: We undertake ward rounds as part of our
duties to ensure patients receive the best care possible and we collaborate with a multidisciplinary
team for a better health outcome at the lowest possible cost with minimal side effects.
  • Pharmaco-economics: We evaluate the cost-effectiveness of medications and treatment strategies to appropriately advise and impact hospital formulary decisions.
  • Formulary Management: Pharmacists manage the hospitals’ formularies, ensuring that medications are safe, effective, and cost-effective.
  • Staff Education and Training: The directorate oversees continuous education and training to pharmacy staff in a bid to ensure they are up to date with global standards.
