Profile of the Ministry
The Ministry of Youth and Sports came into being sometimes in October, 2019 when the Executive Governor, State of Osun, Mr. Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola merged the erstwhile Ministries of Empowerment and youth Engagement and Social Protection, Sports and Special Needs together.
Vision of the Ministry
The vision of the ministry is to motivate a state that has an active teaming youth population that is well equipped, productive and enterprising; a state that has athletes that do not only compete at the national level but at the international scene bringing laurels to it but more importantly, a state that take care of its elderly ones and helps to rid it of the menace of destitute so as to have a beautiful state to call our own.
Mission of the Ministry
is to ensure that the Ministry becomes the instrument through which the state achieving the vision.
Objectives Of the Ministry
The ministry objective among other thing, includes:-
(i) To formulate and implement policies that engender all round youth development whilst ensuring enabling environment for youth development.
(ii) To oversee and supervise the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Scheme in the state.
(iii) Ensure mainstreaming of Youth issue, in all government agencies, institution and non-governmental institutions whilst that all youth programmes are youth centered and youth driven.
(iv) Promote welfare of the elderly Persons in order for them to live satisfactory and comfortable life.
(v) Oversee and monitor the activities of the state of Osun Sports Council.
(vi) To provide rehabilitation/vocational training for erstwhile mentally challenged persons and destitute.
(vii) To promote welfare of the persons with disabilities by providing the need vocational skills and employment opportunities for the purpose of their rehabilitation.
(viii) Mobilizes resources for the youth programmes and projects.
(ix) To encourage sports from the grassroots particularly on schools and local government in the state of Osun. âcatching them youngâ.
(x) To retrieve/evacuate destitute from street of the state and from other state with a view to reinstating them with their families.
(xi) To coordinate the activities of the state owned football team e.t.c.
Functions And Responsibilities of the Ministry
The functions and responsibilities of the Ministry of Youth and Sports are as follow:-
Sport Activities
Oversees and supervises the activities of the Sports Council for proper and effective management.
Youth Developments
Development of Youth in the State through Sporting Activities.
Youth Coordination
Responsible for all the overall coordination and organization of Youth Development activities and programmes in the state such as: Initiating, disclosing and supervising Physical structure for Youth Development.; reduction of youth unemployment through the promotion of self-employment enterprises; addressing the specific social economic and health problems that confront the youths in their efforts to develop their capacity; promoting the moral development and valves orientation in the Youth e.t.c.
Sporting Competitions
Providing conducive environment for effective sporting activities in the State in order to produce productive athletes that will win laurels for the State at National and international Competitions.
Social Services
Delivering Social Services to the Vulnerable in the society through the implementation of policies and programmes necessary for all round development of the Persons with Disabilities; retrieval/evacuation of destitute from the streets of the state and re-integration of destitute from other state with their relations; treatment/rehabilitation of mentally challenged; payment of Agba Osun monthly relief allowance (suspended since year 2014 due to paucity of funds); initiating policies and programme for the care of the Elderly Persons and supervision of the activates of the Elderly People Association of Nigeria (EPAN).
