The Government of Osun State has announced the successful execution of a series of climate-focused initiatives in June 2025, further cementing its position as a leading subnational actor in Nigeria’s environmental transformation and clean energy agenda.

Under the visionary leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke, and through the coordination of the Office of the Consultant on Climate Change and Renewable Energy under the Office of the Governor, the following key milestones were achieved:

June 3–4: Strategic Legislative Engagement

Osun State hosted the House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy in a high-level post-conference legislative roundtable, following the National Legislative Conference on Renewable Energy. The visit focused on localizing national clean energy policies at the subnational level.

During the roundtable, Osun State launched:
• The Osun State Climate Action Plan
• A comprehensive Renewable Energy Policy Document
• The Climate-Smart Investment Portfolio
• The Circular Economy Action Plan

These documents represent Osun’s roadmap for inclusive, climate-resilient development across sectors.

June 18: Governor Adeleke Honoured

Governor Adeleke received a Climate Leadership Award from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in recognition of his bold environmental policies and outstanding contribution to subnational climate action in Nigeria.

June 23: Launch of IMOLE Solar Lanterns

The state rolled out the “One Child, One Lamp” initiative, distributing IMOLE Solar Lanterns to students in rural secondary schools across all six geopolitical zones. The project aims to support academic performance and energy access for students writing the NECO examinations.

June 28: Osun Recycling Hub Becomes Operational

The state’s flagship Recycling Hub officially commenced operations. This critical infrastructure is a cornerstone of Osun’s Waste-to-Wealth Strategy, designed to promote a circular economy, generate green jobs, and reduce environmental waste across the state.

A Model for Climate-Smart Governance

“These achievements reflect our administration’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development, innovation, and climate justice,” said Professor Chinwe Obuaku, Consultant on Climate Change and Renewable Energy to the Governor. “We are building not just infrastructure, but a climate-conscious future for generations to come.”

Osun State continues to welcome partnerships with federal stakeholders, development agencies, the private sector, and civil society as it scales these interventions for broader impact.
