June 12: Osun Declares Today Public Holiday

The gesture is to commemorate the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

The Osun State Government on Wednesday declared Thursday a work-free day for residents of the state.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Sunday Akere, made this public in a press statement.

According to the statement, the gesture is to commemorate the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

The election, won by the late Moshood Abiola, popularly known as MKO, was annulled by the Ibrahim Babangida military dictatorship.

Mr. Abiola was later imprisoned by the Sani Abacha junta. He died in prison in 1998.
