LG

LGContrary to insinuations of a frosty relationship between the governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and local government chairmen in the state, the chairmen yesterday said they are not at loggerheads with the governor.
Speaking at a press conference attended by the executive secretaries of the local governments and addressed by their chairman, Prince Olusoji Ajayi, the forum of LG chairmen in the state described the speculation as the nefarious act of some fifth columnists, adding that the body still maintains a cordial relationship with the governor.
The chairmen who declared their commitment to the second term bid of the governor noted that whoever wants the state to continue to develop will know that Aregbesola deserves a second term.
Prince Ajayi warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies not to attempt to rig the August 9 governorship election in the state, calling for a level playing ground for all the political parties involved.
The forum condemned pockets of crisis in some of the re-classified schools in the state, claiming that the crises are politically motivated, saying the re-classification is designed to strengthen education.
“The government does not just merge schools; it is to fill up the model schools which have higher accommodation capacity than the old ones,” he said.
On local government election, the forum expressed members’ readiness for the exercise, adding that the uniform development that has become the hallmark of Aregbesola’s administration has eroded any kind of fear of defeat at the polls.
Opposition parties, under the aegis of Alliance of Collaborating Political Parties (ACPP) in Osun State, have described the call for the removal of the state resident electoral commissioner (REC), Mr Rufus Akeju, by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as an attempt to scandalise the electoral body in the state.
A statement issued by their chairmen in Osogbo yesterday noted that PDP’s position on the REC did not enjoy the support of a majority of the registered political parties in the state.

Aregbesola Decries Yobe Killings

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has decried the recent killing of students in Yobe State by the  Boko Haram, describing it as brutal and barbaric.
Aregbesola while speaking through his Director of Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, said the killing of the innocent students was unwarranted as such act could only be perpetrated by people who have lost sanity and lack human feelings.
The governor said he was alarmed by the inhumane and brazen manner in which the Boko Haram now unleash violence on all people in the society. He said the activities of Boko Haram should worry all in the country because attacks on innocent and defenceless school students is now becoming a regular occurrence, a trend that must as a matter of urgency be arrested forthwith.
Aregbesola called on security agencies to be proactive in safeguarding lives of people and their property, saying , “What could drive people to do such mad thing is unimaginable. What for, and in the name of what could anyone murder innocent school children in such cold blood? Nowhere in the country seems safe for people again. All security agencies particularly those involved with intelligence gathering must gird their loins, improve on their acts and come to the rescue of Nigerians.
This latest act of reckless massacre of innocent citizens is unacceptable, mind-boggling, frightening and wicked. It calls for concerted efforts from all patriots to find a lasting solution to this menace. After all, the security and welfare of citizens remain the supreme responsibilities of any organized society”, he said.

ROAD INSPECTION 1 a

ROAD INSPECTION 1 aSIR: Recently, I made a voluntary good governance tour of Osun State, with a view to truly intimating myself with the progress made by Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola’s government in the last three years. My findings were heart-warming and reflective of an administrator, who knows his onions. I found to my happiness, that hitherto, inaccessible roads in remote parts of the state now have Aregbesola’s magic wands on them.
From my native Ede, through Iperindo, Ifetedo, Ejigbo, Orile-Owu, Ikire-Ile, Ife-Odan, Ikotun in Egbedore LGA, Ajagunlase, Ikirun up to Otan-Ayegbaju, Ife Ondaye, Ifewara, and some parts of Ijesaland, the story is the same. The 10km-stretch of road rehabilitation embarked upon by the 30 local government areas in the state have impacted positively on the lives of the people. The indigenes of these areas are united in one thing, that good roads are beneficial to all; be you the rich or poor. Good roads do not discriminate on who uses them, they opined. The ordinary folks in Osun are at peace with Aregbesola’s modest achievements.
Of particular importance is the Oba Adesoji Aderemi road that still under construction. That particular road will go down in the history of Osun State, as a master-piece of an infrastructure. A feel of just one kilometre part of the road that has so far been stone-based and aesthetically asphalted will convince the worst of Aregbesola’s critics that this governor knows the rudiment of what it takes to put a road that will stand the test of time in place. The 21st century technology is being deployed in the construction of this particular road in memory of the first African Governor of old Western Region.
Work is going on at a feverish pitch on the road which has now reached an advanced stage. This is not to lose sight of transformation that the Osogbo township roads are witnessing. Indeed, anything is possible if we have faith, the will and the heart. I know we all have the will to play our parts in this campaign for accelerated development in Osun State. I know we have faith in the present regime and we have the hearts to face the challenges ahead.
Ogbeni Rauf , like the late sage, Papa Obafemi Awolowo of blessed memory, does not claim to have a monopoly of wisdom. But the trouble is that, when some other politicians are spending whole days and nights on frivolities, Aregbesola is always at his post, working hard at Osun State problems and trying hard to find solutions to them. For Osun 2014, it is Aregbesola against Aregbesola. End of discussion.

Revamping Of Education Sector Has No Religious Motive, Aregbesola Insists

AFTER enduring decades of poor and decrepit classrooms and the general lack of sundry appurtenances in their school, pupils of Baptist Elementary School, Ile-Ife and members of Ilare Community recently thronged the premises of the school to witness the commissioning of the once decrepit structure, now an ultra-modern facility courtesy of the Osun state government.
The newly transformed school, now also plays host to Anglican Central School A&B; St John’s School A&B; Local Authority Elementary School as well as the host school.
Part of the structures that make up the new school include 25 classrooms, offices for two head teachers, two staff rooms, one facility manager’s office, a multipurpose hall, food court, library, sickbay, 12 toilets for pupils, four toilets for teachers, recreational zone and a security house. And from an initial total enrollment of 162, the school now accommodates about 1000 pupils.
Established in 1925 by the Ilare First Baptist Church, the school was taken over by the government in 1975 and has since suffered series of setbacks. Its infrastructure had decayed while quality of teachers remained poor. Eighty-year-old, Pa Amiel Fagbulu, who was part of the arrangement when the government took over schools in 1975 through a decree said: “Anyone who knows what it means for a child to be seated and learning in a pleasant environment cannot but rejoice with those state governments that are bending backwards to provide first-class physical facilities for the children to learn in.”
He further described as heroic and great commitment, any government’s decision to take up the challenge of putting up many purpose-built learning institutions across a state as large as Osun, and at the same time provide food, uniform and instructional materials.
“These children have no reason to yell now because they are provided with almost everything that they need to enjoy learning and securing their future. The quality and quantity of teachers have been assured; parents have also been relieved of the burden of paying for a thousand and one things for their children’s education and children have not had it so good in Nigeria since independence. They should therefore guard what they have been given on a platter of gold jealously,” he stated.
Governor Rauf Aregbesola, in his remarks stated that by design and purpose, the new school buildings are not for Muslims or Christians neither are they for adherents of any other religion. His word: “They (school buildings) are for all children of Osun, regardless of their circumstances of birth. This I expect should be the basis upon which government should be engaged and encouraged. The education of our children should not be a subject for petty squabbles or unhealthy politics about our narrow interests. Indeed, if we are genuinely interested in the future of our children, we should bury our narrow concerns of today in order to assure for them a glorious tomorrow.”
According to the governor, preparing children for the future is a responsibility that must be fulfilled by all. “It is one for which we will never be forgiven if we fail in its fulfillment. The world around us is moving on and at a pace that leaves no room for lack of seriousness or half-measures, especially with regard to education.” Aregbesola, who asserted that the world has been changed radically by technology in the last 20 years hence, “woe betide a nation or a people that is not prepared for this change.

“This is why we remain unflinchingly focused on giving the best education to our children in a most conducive learning environment. Since we began the journey a little over three years ago, we have recorded significant achievements that give us the courage to press on,” he added.
On the progress made so far in the education sector, he said that the state has added 10,407 new teachers to the list of public school teaching staff, thereby taking the total 12,715 teachers in primary schools and 7,848 teachers in secondary schools in the state.
According to him, this amounts to a 54.8 per cent increase in the number of public school teachers inherited, in addition to the same non-teaching staff, whose number has also increased by 564. Also, he noted that the salaries and pensions of primary and secondary school teachers now costs the government N16.8b and N10.3b respectively on an annual basis.

SONY DSC

SONY DSCOsun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, commended the Federal Government for its efforts towards providing ensuring sufficient water for the people in the region, particularly Ilesha town.
Aregbesola made the commendation when the Minister of Water Resources, Sarah Reng Ochekpe, accompanied by the ministry’s technical officials, toured the Ilesha Dam after visiting him at the State Government House in Osun State.
The governor also expressed his appreciation to the Minister for her unusual interest in the welfare of the people of the state, explaining that the suffering of the people who searched for potable water would be alleviated as soon as the project gets completed.
He noted that while being mindful of the shared responsibility of the three tiers of government in the provision of potable water to the people, he is conscious of the need for more assistance in the reticulation of water from the dam to ensure perfect completion of the project because of the limited funds from the State.
The Governor stressed the need to continue with the second and third phases of the project towards ensuring the realization of the ultimate objectives of the huge investment. He stated that the State Government on its part would complement the federal government’s efforts and will require support in the treatment of the water as well as its reticulation for public consumption. He promised the State
Government’s support and solicited for further partnership from the federal government on more of such projects in the State.
Ochekpe averred that the President’s intention to get all projects completed did inspire the revisit to the dam which was beneficial to the people.
She said the President was earnestly embarking on projects which would improve the living standard of the people.
The minister said the Federal Government would partner with the State Government towards full utilisation of the dam.
She called on the State Government to ensure that the water was well treated and reticulated before distribution to the community during the second and third phases of the project.
“We believe that after completing the first phase of the project, the FG will continually work with the State Government, in order to make potable water available to the people,” she said.

OPINION: Why FG Took Over Schools in 1975 – Pa Fagbulu

Dr. Amiel Fagbulu, 80, who was part of the Federal Government’s arrangement to take over schools in 1975 has said that the arrival of a new child should ordinarily be a thing of joy not only for the lucky parents but also for those around who love them and know the hazards and hardships of child-bearing.
Fagbulu who wrote this piece on the launch of Baptist Central Elementary School, Ilare, Ile-ife said those who know what it means for a child to learn in a pleasant environment cannot but rejoice with those state governments that are providing first-class physical facilities for the children to learn in.
He said that most people take for granted the fact that governments are only doing what they need to do by providing functional, spacious and convenient facilities for the children in schools, adding, “they hardly pause to think of the extreme cost of those facilities and the juggling of budgets that has to be done to meet other needs of parents for good roads, health centres, safe drinking water, and to some extent, work.
According to him, those governments that are shunning cheaper, less safe and effective school structures and are at the same time increasing the number of children going to school are not unaware of the need to ‘feed and clothe’ these children who need to be attended to properly
. It is a heroic act and one of great commitment for anyone to take up the expensive challenge of putting up many purpose-built learning institutions across a state as large as Osun, and providing at the same time food, uniform and instructional materials that are delivered at the cutting edge of technology.
“Fortunately,” he continued, “these children have no reason to yell now because they are provided with almost everything that they need to enjoy while schooling, learning and securing their future. The quality and quantity of teachers have been assured; parents have also been relieved of the burden of paying for a thousand and one things for their children’s education; and children have not had it so good in Nigeria since independence. They should therefore guard what they have been given on a platter of gold, jealously.”
Comparing the situation of schools decades ago to what it is in Osun now, Fagbulu said: “I taught at the Government College, Ibadan. I was Principal of Edo College, Benin City. As an inspector, I visited educational institutions from Warri to Ilaro. As a Chief Inspector, I knew intimately all secondary schools in the old Western Region. Above all, I was part of the Aiyetoro Comprehensive High School dream. I feel qualified therefore to say that the standard of the provisions being made systematically for children of the State of Osun match and in some respects, surpass what those schools of the past that have become legends had.”

According to him, with the injection of dedicated and properly oriented head teachers, and the internalization of the Omoluabi philosophy, there is no reason why these schools cannot match or surpass the greatness of King’s College, Igbobi College, Baptist Academy, Queen’s College, St. Anne’s College, Aiyetoro, Ikenne, and other great schools that have become legends of our time.
His words: “Now that schools are really schools and qualified teachers and not quacks are in charge of the future of our children, some of us who have been around for almost too long are already concerned about the future of the schools that are being celebrated today.
“There are many strategies that could be adopted to safeguard the future of these buildings. An obvious one is for government to employ one or two guards to keep watch around the clock, especially after hours. Another is for the buildings to be handed over to the community for upkeep and to secure.
The third is for the Local Government in which the school is located to take responsibility for keeping them properly maintained and secure. Another is to have a dedicated body to do nothing more than maintain all such facilities as they become commonplace in all our towns and cities.
“The demerit of the first is that because schools belong to the people, it is an absolute disservice to the community for it not to make an input – any input – to providing education for its children. What one gets free is easier forgotten than what one really worked for.
“Handing the building over to the community has its downturn. Do the people feel committed enough to undertake the responsibility of keeping the school absolutely clean at all times? What if the will is there but the wherewithal to accomplish what is desired is not? These and other questions need to be asked and answered satisfactorily before any action is taken in that direction.
“Of the first three options, the most appealing is that the schools be handed to the LGA to maintain and guard vigilantly. That body, unlike communities, can be sanctioned if it fails to perform this duty. Also the budgetary obligations can be met by any LGA that is serious and responsible. And since the LGA is supposed to be the people’s government, the communities in which they are situated will be involved in one form or the other in their upkeep and proper use.
Finally, a Schools Maintenance Board that will also have a training school attached to it, to train and certify janitors at the highest level to upkeep schools, and public and private facilities, could be established to do the work. Expertise would be developed and costs would be minimized by offering paid services to institutions and private companies. If properly managed, it could be the answer to elongate the lives of these structures.
“We are witnessing history today. Let us ensure that those who made it possible are there tomorrow.”
