Ila0Rally-5Traditional rulers from Osun Central senatorial district comprising ten local government areas have pledged their support for the re-election bid of Osun State governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola.

At an event held at GMT hotel, Osogbo, the traditional rulers, led by their chairman, the Orangun of Ila, Oba Wahab Adedotun othsaid their decision was borne out of their believe in the ability of Governor Aregbesola to further transform the state, if given another chance.

Oba Adedotun said that the endorsement was sequel to the massive infrastructural development the state has witnessed under the Aregbesola administration and the demand of their subjects to give the incumbent governor the needed support to break the second term jinx.

Akirun of Ikirun, Oba Adedeji, said the monarchs organised the event to express gratitude to the governor on behalf of their subjects for the people- oriented programmes the administration has executed, especially in Osogbo, the state capital.

He urged people of the state to re-elect Aregbesola because of the positive transformation the state is witnessing since he became governor.

The Olokuku of Okuku, Oba Samuel Oyebode, said the monarchs unanimously endorsed Aregbesola for another term to keep the pace of development being enjoyed in the state.

In separate addresses, the Onigbajo of Igbajo and Olufon of Ifon-Orolu, said Aregbesola has proven that government could be run in a peaceful atmosphere, adding that under his administration, there has been even distribution of projects among towns in the state.

In his remarks, Osun State governor, Aregbesola, described the occasion as an acceptance of his administration’s programmes, saying that the presence of the royal fathers was an indication that his government has reignited people’s passion in government

School feeding experiment: Osun leads, others follow
News

Why UK and other states in Nigeria are rushing to Osun to learn from the state’s experience
Knowledge, they say, is power. But in Osun State, under the leadership of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, power seems to have changed hand. In the past, to gain knowledge, any knowledge, you would have needed to travel to the Whiteman’s country or land, across the seas, to practically beg him to share some of his knowledge with you.
But today, Aregbesola, has succeeded in changing the order of things with his O’MEALS (where O is for Osun) school feeding project or programme. The result is that, on account of his experience/knowledge, today, he is being invited here and there, to lecture those of us, Blacks and Whites, who find his achievement with it, something out of this world.
The height of it came when he was invited, early this year, by the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Agriculture and Food for Development and the Partnership for Child Development (PCD), Imperial College London, to address the United Kingdom’s House of Commons, on Osun Elementary School Feeding and Health Programme (O’MEALS), which they acknowledged as a successful model to be copied worldwide.
Governor Aregbesola who received loud applause as he made eloquent statistical presentation before the parliamentary body during which he advocated the use of biometric registration for beneficiaries of the Home Grown School Feeding programme worldwide to eliminate corruption and guarantee transparency, also called for the adoption of O’MEALS programme, which he wants extended, with appropriate legislative backing, to the first nine years of schooling, in all the 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
During the presentation, four other speakers including Prof. Donald Bundy, the Lead Health and Education Specialist of the World Bank, Mr. Peter Rodrigues, the Chief of School Feeding and Chronic Hunger Unit of the World Food Programme (WFP), Ms. Boitshepo Bibi Giyose of NEPAD and Prof. Josephine Kiamba, the Senior Technical Adviser of the Partnership for Child Development, Imperial College, London, praised Governor Aregbesola for successfully implementing the O’MEALS despite the challenging financial situation of his state.
Months later, Dr. Lesley Drake, Executive Director, Partnership for Child Development, at a workshop with the theme: “Technical Meeting on Osun Elementary School Feeding and Health Programme (O-Meals),” and held, late last month, (May 21-23, 2014), at Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding, Osogbo, still recalls the aftermath of that Ogbeni Aregbesola’s outing in UK parliament.
“UK has now adopted the school feeding programme,” she told Education Review. “Actually, the rationale for inviting the Osun State governor is to see how well he is doing it here and how we can adopt the practice in England, Scotland and Wales and in many countries in Europe. So the message of homegrown school feeding is growing globally and the Governor of Osun State has been the primary motivator in that regard.”
“I will like to add that there is also the way the finances are being managed here which is very important,” Prof. Bundy remarked. “Obviously, in any business where you have a lot of commodities and a lot of people involved, you’ve lots of opportunities and linkages for corruption. But what is done here is really quite clever. One thing about it is that it is cash free. I mean, the system of hiring contractors, the caterers who are involved in the preparation of food involves no cash exchanging hands; rather transfer of money is through a bank system which is very tightly controlled. Most of the food procurement which is another area that otherwise would have been opened to bad practice is managed in a very co-ordinated manner; in fact, it is centrally managed. So instead of thousands of people being involved in that process, there are few people and there’s a lot of checks and balances. I think those are very important lessons for any country and any society. I think it is a very good system.”
It was in order to impart the knowledge not only to the UK parliament and other international communities but to also his fellow Nigerians, that the state government, in partnership with PCD, Vitol, etc, organized the 3-day workshop.
Bundy who spoke on the topic “Levelling the Playing Field: Reasons We Feed Children” noted that, among other things, it improves school attendance, acts as a sort of social security net for the poorest of school children and provides a ready market for local farmers and traders. Daniel Mumuni from Ghana, and who spoke on the topic: “Home Grown School Feeding: Developing Local Agriculture, Nourishing Young Minds” observed that the programme worked and is working in Osun State because of high level political support and added that such political support is needed to make it work in other interested states or countries. But he emphasized the need for close monitoring as to evaluate its success or otherwise at any given point in time.
Mrs. Doyin Orogun, from Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), spoke on “Home Grown Feeding in Nigeria: The Way Forward.” In her presentation, she called on the Federal, states and local governments to get involved in the school feeding programme, noting that “education for all is the responsibility of all.”  Education, she insists, may be free for a child, but to his or her parents or to the state that chose to bear the responsibility it is not free. Praising the states who sent representatives/delegates to understudy Osun, she warned that “when a child drops out of school you are breeding another set of insurgents.”
Aregbesola agrees. “We are having security challenges big enough to engage global attention because we have neglected education in the past,” he said in a keynote address he presented at the occasion. “We are reaping the fruits now. Well-educated children will have the confidence to face the future and remake their world in their own image. Uneducated or badly educated children on the other hand are not only easy recruits for violent gangs, they are incapable of conceiving beauty and all that is good about man, the environment and the good life. They are naturally predisposed to nihilism.
“Against this background, the peculiar challenges that confront elementary education in our clime had to be identified, after which solutions that mainly rely on local resources and efforts would be needed in order to make such solutions viable and enduring. School feeding programme is a revolutionary development in education and indeed governance because it integrates at least four areas of governance with education. These are agriculture, health, job creation and local empowerment.”
“School feeding is very expensive but the positive impact on the pupils and the economy cannot be ignored,” the Deputy Governor and Commissioner of Education, Iyaafin Grace Titi Laoye-Tomori, earlier noted in her welcome address. “We implore the Federal Government to devote part of its annual budget to feeding our elementary school pupils because of the positive impacts it would have on school enrolment, the health of the children, economic growth and development, and particularly, youth empowerment, as many of the currently unemployed youth would be engaged in different types of productive farming. Nigeria as a nation should cut down on frivolities and focus on educating our children.”
Mrs. Louis Onyike, a nutrition officer with the Ministry of Health, Owerri, Imo State, and one of the participants in the workshop, while praising Aregbesola for the courage to embark on such ambitious project expressed her belief that Governor Rochas Okorocha who she said had made free education for Imo children, one of the cornerstones of his administration’s programmes, will want to key into the programme if he is properly briefed and shown its importance.
Mrs. Charity Usifo, of the Department of Primary Health Care, Ministry of Health, Edo State, also expressed the same hope. “It’s a good experience, we in Edo State believe we can come on board even though we are not among the 12 states originally selected for the pilot scheme. When we go home now, we will give our reports, with our findings and recommendations. I believe that our governor, Adams Oshiomhole, will buy into it because he is interested in the transformation of schools. No child is allowed to go into hawking or street trading. Every child must be in school.”

downloadBeneficiaries from Ogun and Osun States have topped the lists of the second edition of the Presidential Scholarship Scheme for Innovation and Development (PRESSID) with 17 and 15 respectively out of 104 awardees.
The Supervising Minister for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, disclosed this  during the award ceremony in Abuja yesterday
Wike again emphasised that the selection process was based purely on merit and merit alone, adding that the beneficiaries underwent a thorough and rigorous screening process before emerging tops out of about 2000 candidates.
Wike urged them to be good ambassadors of Nigeria and added that the government would not hesitate to withdraw the scholarship if any act of misconduct is discovered or reported.
The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, speaking earlier said 90 per cent of the beneficiaries from the first edition of PRESSID are currently in schools  abroad and are doing very well in their studies.
“This shows that our first class degrees are truly first class. It also shows that some of our private universities are coming up and do not just award first class degrees anyhow,” Okojie said.
He added that the scheme was introduced following the discovery that less than 40 per cent of lecturers in the university system had doctorate degrees, and to produce a critical mass of individuals to develop Nigeria in the area of innovation and development.
The style, he said was adopted by India, China and Singapore several years ago, adding that Nigeria would start to benefit in the five years time when the beneficiaries start returning.
Okojie emphasised that the award was based purely on merit and was not influenced by any individual or group.
“There was no nomination from anywhere. This is the only scholarship scheme where the names of the awardees are published, because they are deserving. Nobody came to meet us to do anything, your fate is in your hands,” he said.
The beneficiaries who would study for masters’ and doctoral degrees in the 25 best universities abroad comprises 76 males and 28 females.

Prof.-Bukola-Oyawoye-204×300
News

Prof.-Bukola-Oyawoye-204x300Osun State government has spent N2.5 billion to mitigate the perennial death associated with flooding in the state.
In Osogbo, the State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Professor Bukola Oyawoye, said that in the last three and half years, the present government has done everything within its power to stem the annual death as a result of flooding in the state.
She said that all the rivers in the state had been dredged, expanded and people conscientious had been awaken on the danger of blocking water way in the state.
Her words: “Before the present government came on board, things were extremely bad in the state as rivers were just sweeping pupils and students away in the state; there was even one in the state capital on July 7, 2010 when a pupil was swept away. It was a real agony in the state as the government of the day could not do much to mitigate the agony of the people of the state.
“But what could not be done by the past administration, this government has done, and in the last three and half years, nothing of such has happened. It is due to the ingenuity of the present administration which deems it fit to dredge all the waterways in the state and make live more bearable for the people of Osun State.”
The commissioner said that the world is at risk of extinction as a result of gas flaring, emissions from industries and other anthropogenic and natural activities released into the atmosphere, leading to depletion of the ozone.
She said that the effects of the scenario in the contemporary world are coaster erosion, severe flooding and incessant loss of lives and property, calling on the people of the state to stop blocking waterway in the state, saying the consequence was always devastating flood that will be injurious to the health and lives.
” People are always at risk when water rises as a result of pouring refuse on water and blocking the waterway. So also when rain falls and it is not allowed to flow freely, there will be effect on the environment”.
Oyawoye therefore called on the people of Osun State to always live in a healthy environment and stop dumping refuse on the main water in the state, saying that government has provided enough waste bins and deposed vehicles to make the state clean.
Special Adviser to the governor on Water Resources and Rural Development, Kunle Ige, assured the people of the state that the state government will continue to make life better for them through the ongoing beautification exercise across the state.

The Ogbeni Aregbesola Door-to-Door Campaign Organisation (OD2D) has called on the police and other security agencies to, as a matter of necessity and urgency, take serious action on the reported cases of illegal mass possession of voters’ cards by some individuals.

voters card
OD2D urged the security agencies to act urgently on the illegal possession of the voters’ cards, which is now rampant in the state in the interest of free, fair and credible governorship election.

The OD2D also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate the matter and unravel where those involved are getting the cards from and what purpose they are amassing them for.

The OD2D expressed concern that there were reported cases of voters’ cards’ purchase, and surreptitious obtainance of voters’ cards from unsuspecting voters by some ‘unscrupulous’ politicians, who have consciously engaged in it for some time now.

According to the campaign organization, the illegal possession of the voters’ cards was not unconnected with the coming governorship election in the state.

The OD2D said it was pertinent to alert the INEC, as the umpire in the electoral contest, on the rate at which some individuals were been caught with many voters’ cards across the state.

It noted that some serious actions must be taken by the concerned securities authorities and the INEC, so as to give all stakeholders, a sense of safety for a free, fair and credible election, come August 9, 2014.

“The OD2D team quickly brings to the fore, the case of a woman by name Mrs Alice Gbadebo, who was caught with many voters’ cards at Ibokun in Obokun Local Government Council Area of the state on Thursday 5th day of June 2014 and was handed over to the police.

“However, it was surprising to hear that rather than arraigning the alleged electoral offender in the court, it was said that she was transferred to the police headquarters in Osogbo, where the Commissioner of Police allegedly seized the voters’ cards found on her, when she gave the excuse that she was holding them on behalf of her family,” the group alleged.

It added: “As much as OD2D would have appreciated the seeming humanistic position of the police boss on the matter, it pricks mind if it was not informed by interference by the Police Affairs Minister, Alhaji Jelili Adesiyan, has been suspected all the while.

“The OD2D suspicion, like many other concerned people of Osun, was fuelled further by the fact that many others caught in the past have not been handled the way an offender would be expected to be handled.

“For instance, two cases of voters’ cards purchase by a group of politicians in the name of Omoilu Foundation were reported to the police in Ikirun sometimes ago but were dismissed as mere speculations by the security agents and the culprits were allowed to go scot-free.”

The campaign organisation noted that experts have assumed that the buy-over and or acquiring of voters’ cards by unscrupulous politicians may not be unconnected with attempt to tamper with the voters’ register and have negative effect of the coming governorship election in the state.

“This is why the OD2D wishes to stress the need for security agencies and INEC to take more seriously, the cases involving the multiple cards holding by some politicians and obtaining-by-trick of voters cards from unsuspecting voters.

“A repeat of Anambra election situation should be avoided and all hands must be on deck to have a credible election on August 9, 2014 and subsequent ones,” the group submitted.

_DSC5545As the very much-anticipated August 9 governorship election in the State of Osun draws closer, the campaign heroics of His Excellency, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the incumbent governor and flag bearer of the APC at the elections, has not gone unnoticed.
The campaign train of the Governor recently stopped by the gateway town of Ikire, and received a very massive warm welcome by the people of the town, which generated a huge media buzz with pictures of the large ecstatic crowd in full glare.
Pictures of the Ikire campaign train have made their way to various newspapers and social media platforms, drawing comments from several people. One of such people is Fubura Tam David-West.
_DSC5510
“When someone, acting under the mythology of the so-called Rigged Nigerian Election screams that a politician has been “imposed” on voters, anywhere in Nigeria, we should send a thousand copies of this picture to him or her….” the popular social commentator and author said obviously impressed by the Ikire campaign photos.

_DSC5532
“….These people are not fake. They are not a bought crowd, as some of the Nigerians, who believe that everything is for sale in Nigeria would aver. They are active democratic citizens.” Fubura Tam David-West continued.
_DSC5506
The Ikire campaign event was the second in the series of campaign tours around the State of Osun undertaken by His Excellency Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola ahead of the election in August.
_DSC5508
The campaign train witnessed several men and women, old and young trooping out amidst drums and dancing from neighbouring towns and villages to welcome the Governor as he acknowledged the waves and cheers from the obviously excited crowd. It was also an opportunity for the people to thank Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola for the transformation the State of Osun has witnessed in the past three and a half years since he took office.

The people of Iwo Federal Constituency have been called upon to come out en mass to vote and protect their votes from electoral fraudsters in the coming August 9th Governorship election.

The Secretary to the Government of the State of Osun (SSG), Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, made this call at the kick-off of the re-election campaign of the governor for the Iwo Federal Constituency.

It was a carnival as political office holders from the area gathered to mobilise support for the second term bid of the governor.

Among those present at the rally were the member of the House of Representatives representing the area, Mr. Ghafar Amere; Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mofolake Adegboyega, Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy in the Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Rafiu Isamotu, Assistant Chief of Staff, Hon. Mudathir Toogun, member of the House of Assembly, Hon, Bola Akinloye and a host of others

The Constituency comprises three councils of Iwo, Ola Oluwa and Ayedire.

Alhaji Adeoti said the Government of Governor Rauf Aregbesola, will leave no stone unturned in making sure that the August 9 election in the state is violent-free.

The Osun Government scribe said the people of the state are well-informed about the choice that will benefit them and so they will do everything within their powers to prevent any politician to dubiously upturn their electoral choice.

“The people of Osun are ready for election. We have told them not only to troop out to vote but also to stay at the polling booths and ensure their votes are properly counted, recorded and announced.

“This time round, there won’t be chance for anyone to rig or stuff the ballot boxes.

News

emir_of_kano_alhaji_ado_bayeroGovernor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has described the death of Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, as a huge loss to Nigeria.

In a statement by the Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, Aregbesola said the news of the demise of one the most prominent traditional rulers in the country was shocking and sad.

The governor said the nation lost the influential Emir at its critical socio-political challenges.

He said that Ado Bayero’s death will leave a huge gap in the political, social, security and religious affairs of the nation.

The statement read in part: “Indeed the death of Alhaji Ado Bayero is very sad. We have lost a father-figure; we have lost a great leader; we have indeed lost a bridge builder and a great man whose image stood tall not only in Kano State and the North but also the country as whole.

“The wisdom, experience and vast influence of the Emir will be missed as the nation searches for permanent solutions to insecurity, religious and socio-political upheavals it currently battles with.

“Ado Bayero will be remembered as one of the strongest and influential emirs in the history of the country.

“During his life, he demonstrated an uncommon will and love for peace and religious harmony among ethnic groups and religious organisations in his domain.

“Besides, the later Emir had always constantly identified with traditional rulers from other parts of the country to ensure that there is peace and religious tolerance among ethnic nationalities in the country wherever they may be residing.

” I have no doubt that we are going to miss this eminent leader greatly. On behalf of myself, the state and entire people of Osun, we  extend our heart-felt condolences to the family- immediate and extended- of the late Emir and, especially his intimate friend, His Royal Majesty, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, the Ooni of Ife, Kano State Government and the entire people of the ancient commercial city.

“May Allah Grant the deceased aljana firdaus.”
